Friday, March 27, 2009SALT LAKE CITY, UT - March 26, 2009 - In celebration of World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour at 8:30 PM on March 28th, the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has committed to turning off its lights in support of Earth Hour’s global call for action on climate change.
The Salt Lake Temple joins other iconic landmarks around the world such as the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Brooklyn Bridge and Broadway Theater marquees in New York City, the Sears Tower in Chicago, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris and the Symphony of Lights in Hong Kong.
“Prudent stewardship and wise use of resources are principles that Church leaders have emphasized throughout the history of the Church,” says Scott Trotter, LDS Church Spokesman. “The Church encourages its members to join with their fellow citizens in supporting worthy programs that will make their communities better places to live and raise their families.”
To date, more than 2,700 cities and towns located in 83 countries have committed to officially going dark for one hour as individuals, businesses, government buildings, schools and major landmarks turn off non-essential lighting in what will be the largest climate event in history. More than 210 cities have signed on to participate in the U.S., including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New York, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. A full list of cities can be found at http://www.earthhourus.org.
WWF officials stress the importance of safety during Earth Hour, asking that all lighting related to public safety remain on.
