KC Council members: Turn off your lights for Earth Hour

Saturday, March 28, 2009

Kansas City Council members are urging residents to turn off their lights between 8:30 and 9:30 Saturday night, as part of an international event called “Earth Hour.”

The effort is part of a campaign to show how everyone can make a difference in preventing climate change.

Even the roof lights at City Hall will be turned off for an hour Saturday night.

Council members Cathy Jolly, Cindy Circo and Jan Marcason are getting the word out, along with Jill DeWitt of the Missouri Audubon Society and Melissa Hope of the Sierra Club.

Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour.

Last year, the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights.

This year, the goal is to have 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote.
