Earth Hour is back and it's coming up Saturday night. Were you aware?
Not many were last year, but for 2009, organizers have an ambitious goal of getting 1 billion people to turn off their lights on Saturday. There were 50 million who obliged in 2008.
The idea is to get people and businesses across the world to turn off their light switch or "vote earth" for one hour starting at 8:30 p.m. If you don't, you are voting for global warming, the group behind it says.
From what I can tell you are just supposed to turn off your lights, but can you still watch TV? What if you have money riding on the Villanova/Pitt game? You wouldn't be able to catch the end of it.
So keep the TV on and turn off all the lights and party like it's 1879. That's the year Mr. Edison gave us the light bulb.
(If he was with us now, I think he would have wanted us to keep the TV on, plus I take him for Pitt fan.)
And that's why some UM students are celebrating Edison Hour Saturday night.
To honor the man who invented the light bulb, they want everyone to turn on every light they can during Earth Hour and "join together in a celebration of technology and industrialization."
So Saturday night is shaping up to be a battle between Edison and the Earth.
Who will you vote for?
